## CHF/CAD: what has moved in recent months

The franc and the Canadian dollar respond to unrelated forces: the SNB remains at 0%, while the Bank of Canada held its rate at 2.25% on 2 September; the country then lost 68,000 jobs in September. At the 19 October reference rate, one franc is worth 1.7059 Canadian dollars.

CHF

### SNB at 0%, the franc firms in October

The Swiss National Bank kept its policy rate at 0% on 24 September 2026 and projects inflation of 0.7% for 2026, then 0.8% in 2027 and in 2028. Inflation stood at +1.0% year on year in September, according to the Federal Statistical Office. On the currency side, the euro climbed as high as 0.9478 francs on 30 September, its high for the year, before falling back to 0.9261 at the ECB reference rate of 19 October, its lowest level since 21 July. The SNB's next assessment is on 10 December 2026.

### The Bank of Canada on hold, jobs fall

The Bank of Canada kept its target for the overnight rate at 2.25% on 2 September 2026. Canadian inflation rose to 3.1% year on year in September, from 3.0% in August, according to Statistics Canada. The economy lost 68,000 jobs in September and unemployment rose to 6.5%; the Canadian dollar hit its low for the year against the US dollar on 12 October, at 1.4262 Canadian dollars per US dollar, before returning to 1.4074 on 19 October. The next decision is on 28 October 2026, alongside the Monetary Policy Report.

### What it means for you

CHF/CAD is also read through the US dollar, which hit a high for the year against the loonie on 12 October. The Bank of Canada decides on 28 October, with inflation back up at 3.1% and unemployment at 6.5%: two conflicting signals that make its decision harder to read. Spreading conversions remains the simplest shock absorber.

The economics of the pair

## CHF/CAD: the SNB versus the Bank of Canada

The rate between the **Swiss franc (CHF)** and the **Canadian dollar (CAD)** pits two very different currency profiles against each other. Its dynamics are dictated by the relationship between two central banks: the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and the Bank of Canada (BoC).

The CHF enjoys safe-haven status: in times of uncertainty, investors take refuge in it and the franc appreciates. The Canadian dollar, on the other hand, is a "commodity" currency: strongly correlated to the price of oil (Canada is a major energy exporter), it strengthens when energy prices rise and appetite for risk is high. As a result: the CHF/CAD pair can experience marked movements depending on the economic climate.

To watch in order to anticipate the pair: rate decisions by the SNB and the Bank of Canada, movements in the price of a barrel (WTI and Brent), inflation on both sides, as well as the risk climate on global markets. A gap in monetary policy between Bern and Ottawa quickly translates into the CHF/CAD rate.

Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions about CHF/CAD exchange

There is no universally ideal day. The CHF/CAD rate depends on market movements, on decisions by the SNB and the Bank of Canada (BoC), as well as on the price of oil, on which the Canadian dollar heavily depends. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

With ibani, you get a personal Swiss (CH) IBAN into which you pay your Swiss francs. ibani then converts your CHF into Canadian dollars at the real market rate, plus a margin of 0.40% to 0.15% depending on the amount, and transfers the funds to an account in Canada, with no hidden fees. Ideal for funding studies, a property project or helping a loved one settled in Canada.

The Swiss franc is a stable safe-haven, whereas the Canadian dollar is a commodity-linked currency, very sensitive to the price of oil and to investors' appetite for risk. When oil rises, the CAD tends to strengthen against the CHF; in times of uncertainty, the CHF regains the advantage.

ibani applies a transparent margin from 0.40% to 0.15% on the real interbank rate, decreasing with amounts. There are no opening or account maintenance fees. It's up to 10× cheaper than a traditional bank. See the details on the [Rates](https://www.ibani.com/en/rates) page.
