## CHF/EUR: what has moved in recent months

The euro's summer rebound has found its ceiling. After clearing resistance at 0.9400 on 18 August, at 0.9406, EUR/CHF fell back 0.8% in two sessions to 0.9333 on 20 August before settling around 0.9362. The working corridor has narrowed to 0.9300–0.9410.

### SNB on hold, growth springs a surprise

The Swiss National Bank kept its policy rate at 0.00% at its 18 June 2026 assessment, a fourth consecutive hold, with inflation projected at 0.6% for both 2026 and 2027. Swiss inflation fell back to 0.4% year on year in July, a four-month low. The surprise of the quarter: GDP jumped 1.5% in the second quarter against expectations of 0.2% to 0.4%, driven by a 15.2% rebound in chemical and pharmaceutical exports. The next assessment is on 24 September 2026.

### The ECB tightened in June, then waited

On 11 June 2026 the European Central Bank raised its deposit rate by 25 basis points to 2.25% — its first hike since 2023 — in response to an imported energy shock, taking the main refinancing rate to 2.40%. On 23 July it left all three rates unchanged without committing to a path. Euro area inflation came in at 2.9% in July after 2.8% in June, and August PMIs moved clearly back into expansion (composite at 52.1). Rate markets price a further hike on 10 September at roughly 80%.

The economics of the pair

## CHF/EUR: the SNB versus the ECB

The rate between the **Swiss franc (CHF)** and the **euro (EUR)** is one of the most closely watched monetary indicators in Europe. Its dynamics are dictated by the relationship between two central banks: the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and the European Central Bank (ECB).

The CHF enjoys safe-haven status. In times of crisis (geopolitical uncertainty, tensions over eurozone debt, inflation), investors buy the Swiss franc en masse. In parallel, the SNB pursues a rigorous policy to contain imported inflation, tending to accept an appreciation of the CHF against the euro to cushion the cost of imports.

Historical reference points: the 1.20 floor set by the SNB in 2011, its abrupt abandonment in January 2015 (the "Francogeddon"), then the euro's lasting fall below parity from 2022 onwards. To plan ahead, see our [CHF/EUR forecasts](https://www.ibani.com/en/guides/chf-eur-exchange-rate-forecast).

Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions about CHF/EUR exchange

There is no universally ideal day. The CHF/EUR rate depends on market movements and on the decisions of the SNB and the ECB. The Swiss franc, a safe-haven currency, often appreciates during periods of uncertainty in the eurozone. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

With ibani, you get a personal Swiss (CH) IBAN that you give to your employer. As soon as your salary is paid in CHF, the funds are converted into euros at the real market rate, plus a margin of 0.40% to 0.15% depending on the amount, and transferred to your bank account in France, with no hidden fees.

The strength of the Swiss franc is explained by the SNB's monetary policy aimed at limiting imported inflation, by the great stability of the Swiss economy and by its historic status as a safe-haven currency in times of geopolitical crisis.

ibani applies a transparent margin from 0.40% to 0.15% on the real interbank rate, decreasing with amounts. There are no opening, account maintenance or SEPA transfer fees. It's up to 10× cheaper than a traditional bank. See the details on the [Rates](https://www.ibani.com/en/rates) page.
