## CHF/NOK: what has moved in recent months

Norges Bank kept its policy rate at 4.25% on 13 August 2026, with inflation slowing faster than expected — 3.0% in July, 2.7% for the core measure — but still judged too high. Against a franc yielding 0.00%, the yield gap of more than four points remains the pair's primary driver.

### SNB on hold, growth springs a surprise

The Swiss National Bank kept its policy rate at 0.00% at its 18 June 2026 assessment, a fourth consecutive hold, with inflation projected at 0.6% for both 2026 and 2027. Swiss inflation fell back to 0.4% year on year in July, a four-month low. The surprise of the quarter: GDP jumped 1.5% in the second quarter against expectations of 0.2% to 0.4%, driven by a 15.2% rebound in chemical and pharmaceutical exports. The next assessment is on 24 September 2026.

### Norges Bank in a restrictive pause at 4.25%

Norway's central bank kept its policy rate at 4.25% on 13 August 2026. Inflation is slowing faster than expected — 3.0% in July, 2.7% for the CPI-ATE core measure — but is still judged too high, and Governor Ida Wolden Bache has not ruled out that a further hike may become necessary. The Norwegian krone also remains highly sensitive to the oil price.

### What it means for you

The Norwegian krone remains highly sensitive to the oil price, which swung between 84 and 93 dollars a barrel over the second half of August. That double dependence — high rates and volatile crude — explains the amplitude of CHF/NOK and justifies splitting conversions.

The economics of the pair

## CHF/NOK: the SNB versus Norges Bank

The rate between the **Swiss franc (CHF)** and the **Norwegian krone (NOK)** pits two currencies with very different profiles against each other. Its dynamic depends on the relationship between two central banks: the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and Norges Bank, the central bank of Norway.

The CHF enjoys safe-haven status: in times of market uncertainty, investors turn to the Swiss franc, which then tends to appreciate. Conversely, the Norwegian krone is a currency tied to commodities: as Norway is a major exporter of oil and gas, the NOK is sensitive to energy prices and to risk appetite. When oil rises, the krone tends to strengthen.

The monetary policy gap also plays a central role. Norges Bank has historically kept policy rates significantly higher than the SNB, whose policy is aimed above all at containing imported inflation and preserving the stability of the franc. This rate differential, combined with the volatility of the energy market, makes the CHF/NOK pair more volatile than pairs such as CHF/EUR.
