Our experts' analysis

## The Swiss franc, the world's great safe-haven currency.

The Swiss franc (CHF) holds a unique position on the foreign exchange market. Historically regarded as one of the strongest and most reliable currencies in the world, it plays the role of a global safe haven: in times of geopolitical uncertainty or economic turbulence, it tends to appreciate sharply.

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) watches this currency closely, particularly against the euro (the key **EUR/CHF** pair), because an overly strong franc penalises Swiss exports. For cross-border workers and SMEs, tracking these major macroeconomic movements helps to choose the right moment to secure their salary or supplier payment conversions.

Monetary policy

## The SNB's policy towards the Swiss franc

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) has as its primary mandate to ensure price stability while taking account of economic developments. Its role is crucial because of the franc's historic safe-haven status: in the event of a global crisis, investors buy CHF en masse, which sends its valuation soaring.

To counter an overvaluation that penalises the export industry and tourism, the SNB uses two major levers:

### Interventions on the foreign exchange market

Massive purchases of foreign currencies (euros, dollars) to weaken the franc through the interplay of supply and demand, inflating the central bank's balance sheet.

### Interest rates

A direct lever, pushed to unprecedented negative rates (down to -0.75%) for nearly eight years, to discourage the accumulation of deposits in francs.

With the return of global inflation, the SNB changed paradigm and tolerated a strong franc to fight "imported inflation", thereby protecting domestic purchasing power. Its decisions have a direct impact on the strength of the franc and the competitiveness of Swiss exporters.

History of the Swiss franc

## The key dates of the last 30 years

1999

### Creation of the euro

The single European currency is introduced. The SNB watches this new economic giant; the exchange rate then floats around 1.60 CHF to 1 EUR.

2008

### Financial crisis (subprimes)

Massive inflow of international capital towards the Swiss safe haven. The franc appreciates violently, forcing the SNB into aggressive rate cuts.

Sept. 2011

### Introduction of the floor rate

Faced with the sovereign debt crisis and the overheating of the CHF, the SNB sets a floor rate of 1.20 CHF to 1 EUR, committing to buy euros without limit to defend it.

Jan. 2015

### The "Francogeddon" shock

Surprise abandonment of the floor rate. The franc instantly surges by around 30% against the euro. The SNB then introduces a record negative policy rate of -0.75%.

2022

### End of the negative rate era

To fight post-pandemic global inflation, the SNB carries out several consecutive hikes to normalise the cost of money.

2024

### First rate cuts

With inflation back under control, the SNB is the first major central bank to cut its policy rate. Yet the CHF remains at record highs, below parity against the euro.
