## EUR/CAD: what has moved in recent months

The euro area is tightening, Canada is waiting: the ECB raised its deposit rate to 2.50% on 10 September, while the Bank of Canada stayed at 2.25% on 2 September. Inflation is diverging too, 3.8% in the euro area against 3.1% in Canada in September. One euro is worth 1.5798 Canadian dollars at the 19 October reference rate.

### The ECB raised rates in September

On 10 September 2026 the European Central Bank raised its three key interest rates by 25 basis points: the deposit facility rate rose to 2.50% and the main refinancing operations rate to 2.65%, effective 16 September. Euro area inflation accelerated to 3.8% in September, after 3.2% in August, according to Eurostat. Yet the euro fell against the dollar: EUR/USD hit its low for the year on 7 October, at 1.1177, and stood at 1.1225 on 19 October. The next decision is on 29 October 2026, then on 17 December.

### The Bank of Canada on hold, jobs fall

The Bank of Canada kept its target for the overnight rate at 2.25% on 2 September 2026. Canadian inflation rose to 3.1% year on year in September, from 3.0% in August, according to Statistics Canada. The economy lost 68,000 jobs in September and unemployment rose to 6.5%; the Canadian dollar hit its low for the year against the US dollar on 12 October, at 1.4262 Canadian dollars per US dollar, before returning to 1.4074 on 19 October. The next decision is on 28 October 2026, alongside the Monetary Policy Report.

### What it means for you

The two central banks meet one day apart, on 28 October in Ottawa and on the 29th in Frankfurt. The fall in Canadian employment in September weighs on the loonie, while higher inflation argues the other way: the pair could react above all to whichever of the two decisions surprises more.

The economics of the pair

## EUR/CAD: the ECB against the Bank of Canada

The rate between the **euro (EUR)** and the **Canadian dollar (CAD)** reflects the relationship between two major economic zones: the euro area, steered by the European Central Bank (ECB), and Canada, whose monetary policy is conducted by the Bank of Canada (BoC).

The Canadian dollar is a so-called "commodity-linked" currency. Canada is among the world's leading exporters of oil: the CAD tends to strengthen when crude prices rise, and to weaken when they fall. Conversely, the euro depends on the overall economic situation of the euro area and on the ECB's stance on policy rates and inflation.

In practice, the EUR/CAD rate is watched most closely by those preparing an expatriation, studies or a property purchase in Canada, or who send money to loved ones settled across the Atlantic. The interest rate gap between the ECB and the Bank of Canada, the price of oil and the strength of the North American economy are the main drivers of the pair.

Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions about EUR/CAD exchange

There is no universal ideal day. The EUR/CAD rate depends on market movements and on decisions by the ECB and the Bank of Canada. As the Canadian dollar is a commodity-linked currency, it often strengthens when the price of oil rises. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

With ibani, you add the beneficiary account in Canada, then you transfer your euros. ibani converts your EUR into Canadian dollars at the real market rate, plus a margin of 0.40% to 0.15% depending on the amount, and sends the funds to the destination account, with no hidden fees. Ideal for an expatriation project, studies or a transfer to a loved one settled in Canada.

The Canadian dollar is a commodity-linked currency, in particular to oil, of which Canada is a major exporter. The EUR/CAD rate therefore moves with the price of oil, the interest rate gap between the ECB and the Bank of Canada, as well as the health of the North American economy.

ibani applies a transparent margin from 0.40% to 0.15% on the real interbank rate, decreasing with amounts. There are no opening or account maintenance fees. It's up to 10× cheaper than a traditional bank. See the details on the [Rates](https://www.ibani.com/en/rates) page.
