## EUR/CHF: what has moved in recent months

Seen from the euro area, the sequence is paradoxical: the ECB raised its deposit rate to 2.50% on 10 September and inflation accelerated to 3.8% in September, yet the euro fell against the franc. After a high for the year of 0.9478 on 30 September, the ECB reference rate of 19 October came in at 0.9261 francs to the euro, 1.1% below its 28 August level.

EUR

### The ECB raised rates in September

On 10 September 2026 the European Central Bank raised its three key interest rates by 25 basis points: the deposit facility rate rose to 2.50% and the main refinancing operations rate to 2.65%, effective 16 September. Euro area inflation accelerated to 3.8% in September, after 3.2% in August, according to Eurostat. Yet the euro fell against the dollar: EUR/USD hit its low for the year on 7 October, at 1.1177, and stood at 1.1225 on 19 October. The next decision is on 29 October 2026, then on 17 December.

CHF

### SNB at 0%, the franc firms in October

The Swiss National Bank kept its policy rate at 0% on 24 September 2026 and projects inflation of 0.7% for 2026, then 0.8% in 2027 and in 2028. Inflation stood at +1.0% year on year in September, according to the Federal Statistical Office. On the currency side, the euro climbed as high as 0.9478 francs on 30 September, its high for the year, before falling back to 0.9261 at the ECB reference rate of 19 October, its lowest level since 21 July. The SNB's next assessment is on 10 December 2026.

### What it means for you

Two dates to watch: the ECB on 29 October, then the SNB on 10 December. A rate hike was not enough to support the euro in September, and nothing guarantees that an October decision would have more effect. Spreading conversions avoids making everything depend on a single meeting.

The economics of the pair

## EUR/CHF: the ECB versus the SNB

The rate between the **euro (EUR)** and the **Swiss franc (CHF)** is one of the most closely watched monetary indicators in Europe. Its dynamics play out in the balance of power between two central banks: the European Central Bank (ECB), which steers the eurozone currency, and the Swiss National Bank (SNB).

For a holder of euros who has to settle an expense in Switzerland, the underlying trend is unfavourable: the euro has gradually weakened against the franc. The reasons: long higher inflation in the eurozone, the CHF's safe-haven status and an SNB that tolerates a strong franc to cushion the cost of its imports. With each surge of uncertainty in the eurozone, capital flows into the franc and the euro falls back.

Historical reference points: the floor rate of 1.20 CHF per 1 EUR set by the SNB in 2011, its abrupt abandonment in January 2015 (the "Francogeddon"), then the lasting move of the euro below parity (1 EUR < 1 CHF) from 2022. Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions about EUR/CHF exchange

There is no universally ideal day. The EUR/CHF rate depends on market movements and on the decisions of the ECB and the SNB. The euro tends to weaken against the Swiss franc in times of uncertainty in the eurozone, when investors seek refuge in the CHF. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

With ibani, you fund your account in euros by SEPA transfer from your eurozone bank. ibani converts your EUR into Swiss francs at the real market rate, plus a margin of 0.40% to 0.15% depending on the amount, then transfers the CHF to the Swiss account of your choice (rent, bills, supplier or beneficiary), with no hidden fees.

Since 2022, the euro has traded lastingly below 1 Swiss franc. This weakness of the euro is explained by higher inflation in the eurozone, by the franc's safe-haven status and by the SNB's policy, which tolerates a strong CHF to contain imported inflation.

ibani applies a transparent margin from 0.40% to 0.15% on the real interbank rate, decreasing with amounts. There are no opening, account maintenance or incoming SEPA transfer fees. It's up to 10× cheaper than a traditional bank. See the details on the [Rates](https://www.ibani.com/en/rates) page.
