## EUR/GBP: what has moved in recent months

The euro fell against the pound to 0.84205 at the 19 October reference rate, its low for the year and its weakest level since June 2025. The ECB did raise its deposit rate to 2.50% on 10 September, but the Bank of England remains at 3.75%, with three members in favour of a hike.

### The ECB raised rates in September

On 10 September 2026 the European Central Bank raised its three key interest rates by 25 basis points: the deposit facility rate rose to 2.50% and the main refinancing operations rate to 2.65%, effective 16 September. Euro area inflation accelerated to 3.8% in September, after 3.2% in August, according to Eurostat. Yet the euro fell against the dollar: EUR/USD hit its low for the year on 7 October, at 1.1177, and stood at 1.1225 on 19 October. The next decision is on 29 October 2026, then on 17 December.

GBP

### Sterling at its strongest against the euro in sixteen months

On 17 September 2026 the Bank of England kept Bank Rate at 3.75% by six votes to three: Megan Greene, Catherine Mann and Huw Pill wanted to raise it to 4%. UK inflation rose back to 3.1% in August, from 2.9%; the September figure is published on 21 October. At the ECB reference rate of 19 October, EUR/GBP fell to 0.84205, its low for the year and its weakest level since June 2025. The next decision is on 5 November 2026, then on 17 December.

### What it means for you

The 1.25-point yield gap in sterling's favour remains its main support. A euro converted into pounds buys less today than at any time in sixteen months, and the meetings of 29 October and 5 November could still shift the rate: for a large amount, spreading conversions reduces exposure to a single date.

The economics of the pair

## EUR/GBP: the ECB versus the Bank of England

The rate between the **euro (EUR)** and the **pound sterling (GBP)** is one of the most traded pairs in the world. Its dynamics are dictated by the monetary policy gap between two central banks: the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BoE).

In practice, the pair reads the other way round from the usual: one pound trades for more than one euro, so that the EUR/GBP rate most often oscillates between 0.83 and 0.90. When the Bank of England raises its rates faster than the ECB, the pound tends to appreciate (the EUR/GBP rate falls); conversely, a more marked tightening by the ECB or British inflation that eases supports the euro.

Key markers: the Brexit referendum of June 2016 sent the pound tumbling, pushing EUR/GBP above 0.90; the pair has since remained sensitive to inflation announcements (ONS), to the decisions of the BoE's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and to the eurozone's economic climate. For a payment in the United Kingdom, monitor the real rate and trigger your exchange at the right moment.
