Euro area inflation accelerated to 3.8% in September, after 3.2% in August, according to Eurostat. Yet the euro fell against the dollar: EUR/USD hit its low for the year on 7 October, at 1.1177, and stood at 1.1225 on 19 October. The next decision is on 29 October 2026, then on 17 December.

### What it means for you

For a flow from sterling into euros, the rate is more favourable than at any time in the past sixteen months, with nothing to indicate how long it will last. The decisions of 29 October (ECB) and 5 November (Bank of England) could shift it; converting in tranches avoids betting everything on this level holding.

The economics of the pair

## GBP/EUR: the Bank of England versus the ECB

The rate between the **pound sterling (GBP)** and the **euro (EUR)** is one of the most traded currency pairs in the world. Its dynamics above all reflect the monetary policy gap between two central banks: the Bank of England (BoE) and the European Central Bank (ECB).

When the BoE raises its key rates faster than the ECB, the pound tends to appreciate against the euro, because sterling investments become more rewarding. Conversely, a slowdown in the British economy, persistent inflation or fiscal uncertainty weigh on the pound. The GBP/EUR pair is reputed to be more volatile than the Swiss franc: it reacts sharply to releases on growth, employment and inflation in both the United Kingdom and the eurozone.

Historical reference points: the sharp fall of the pound in the aftermath of the Brexit referendum in June 2016, the strong volatility linked to the negotiations to leave the European Union, then the tensions on British debt in 2022. Since then, the pound has most often moved within a range between 1.10 and 1.20 euros, depending on the decisions of the BoE and the ECB.

Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions about GBP/EUR exchange

There is no universal ideal moment. The GBP/EUR rate depends on market movements and the monetary policy gap between the Bank of England (BoE) and the ECB. The pound reacts strongly to British economic releases and political news. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

With ibani, you open an exchange account and give your details to the party making the payment. The GBP/EUR rate is driven by the gap in key interest rates between the Bank of England and the ECB, by the relative health of the British and eurozone economies, by inflation and by the political climate (including the aftermath of Brexit). The pound is a more volatile currency than the Swiss franc, sensitive to macroeconomic announcements.
