## GBP/SGD: what has moved in recent months

The Bank of England has held its rate at 3.75% since 17 September, with three members in favour of a hike, while Singapore left its exchange rate policy unchanged on 14 October. One pound is worth 1.7050 Singapore dollars at the 19 October reference rate.

GBP

### Sterling at its strongest against the euro in sixteen months

On 17 September 2026 the Bank of England kept Bank Rate at 3.75% by six votes to three: Megan Greene, Catherine Mann and Huw Pill wanted to raise it to 4%. UK inflation rose back to 3.1% in August, from 2.9%; the September figure is published on 21 October. At the ECB reference rate of 19 October, EUR/GBP fell to 0.84205, its low for the year and its weakest level since June 2025. The next decision is on 5 November 2026, then on 17 December.

SGD

### MAS pauses

Singapore does not steer a policy rate but the appreciation slope of its nominal effective exchange rate (S$NEER). On 14 October 2026 MAS left the slope, width and centre of this band unchanged, after two tightenings in April and July. MAS core inflation rose to 2.2% in August, headline inflation to 2.3%, and MAS forecasts core inflation of 1.5% to 2.0% for the year. The next statement is due no later than 29 January 2027.

### What it means for you

The pound reacts to Bank of England meetings, the next of which is on 5 November 2026, whereas MAS's exchange rate policy will not be reviewed before the end of January, barring an unscheduled decision. The dates likely to move the pair are therefore on the UK side.

The economics of the pair

## GBP/SGD: the Bank of England facing the MAS

The rate between the **pound sterling (GBP)** and the **Singapore dollar (SGD)** connects two major international financial centres, London and Singapore. Its dynamics depend on two monetary institutions that operate in radically different ways: the Bank of England (BoE) and the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).

On the British side, the pound sterling is one of the most traded currencies in the world. Its price reacts to Bank of England decisions on its policy rate (the « Bank Rate »), to inflation and to UK economic conditions. Historically more volatile, the GBP can experience sharp swings during political or budgetary episodes, as shown by the period that followed Brexit.

On the Singaporean side, the particularity is significant: the MAS does not steer policy interest rates, but directly the exchange rate of the Singapore dollar, managed within a fluctuation band against a basket of currencies of its main trading partners (the so-called « S$NEER » regime). This management aims to contain imported inflation in a country that imports most of what it consumes, which makes the SGD one of the most stable Asian currencies. In practice, the GBP/SGD rate rises when the pound strengthens and falls in the opposite case; for a transfer to Singapore (studies, real estate, supplier payment, family support), monitoring the real rate helps you choose the right moment.

Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions about GBP/SGD exchange

The GBP/SGD rate depends on two very different monetary policies: the Bank of England (BoE), which sets its policy rates according to UK inflation and economic conditions, and the MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore), which manages not interest rates but the trajectory of the Singapore dollar against a basket of currencies. The pair also reacts to risk appetite and the strength of Asian trade.
