## USD/CHF: what has moved in recent months

The dollar regained 2.6% against the franc between 28 August and 19 October, from 0.8043 to 0.8250. The driver is the rate gap: the Fed raised its rates to 3.75%–4.00% on 16 September, with US inflation at 3.7% in September, while the SNB remains at 0% against inflation of 1.0%.

USD

### The Fed raises rates unanimously

On 16 September 2026 the Federal Reserve raised the target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points, to 3.75%–4.00%, by twelve votes to none. US inflation came in at 3.7% year on year in September, and at 2.6% excluding food and energy. The dollar firmed: against the franc, it hit its 2026 high on 1 October, at 0.8353, and stood at 0.8250 at the 19 October reference rate, up 2.6% since 28 August. The next meeting is on 27 and 28 October 2026, then on 8 and 9 December.

CHF

### SNB at 0%, the franc firms in October

The Swiss National Bank kept its policy rate at 0% on 24 September 2026 and projects inflation of 0.7% for 2026, then 0.8% in 2027 and in 2028. Inflation stood at +1.0% year on year in September, according to the Federal Statistical Office. On the currency side, the euro climbed as high as 0.9478 francs on 30 September, its high for the year, before falling back to 0.9261 at the ECB reference rate of 19 October, its lowest level since 21 July. The SNB's next assessment is on 10 December 2026.

### What it means for you

The pair hit 0.8353 on 1 October, its high for the year, then fell back by more than 1% in just over two weeks. For a dollar income converted into francs, splitting conversions limits the effect of a badly chosen date; the next Fed meeting is on 27 and 28 October 2026.

**ECB reference rate on 19 October 2026:** 1 USD ≈ 0.8250 CHF (excluding margin). The rate shown at the top of the page includes the ibani margin; the converter shows the live rate.

The economics of the pair

## USD/CHF: the Fed versus the SNB

The rate between the **US dollar (USD)** and the **Swiss franc (CHF)** is one of the major pairs on the foreign exchange market. Its dynamics are driven by the monetary policy gap between two central banks: the US Federal Reserve (Fed) and the Swiss National Bank (SNB).

When the Fed raises its key rates faster than the SNB, the dollar tends to strengthen against the franc, as the yield gap makes USD investments more attractive. Conversely, a US easing cycle or a renewed risk aversion benefit the Swiss franc. A particularity of this pair: USD and CHF both share a status of safe-haven currency, so that in a global crisis they can appreciate simultaneously, compressing the amplitude of the rate.

Reference points: USD/CHF parity (1 dollar = 1 franc) is a psychological threshold frequently crossed in both directions. Over the past decade, the franc has broadly strengthened against the dollar, with the SNB ensuring it contains imported inflation. US employment and inflation figures, released each month, trigger the most marked movements on the pair.

Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions about USD/CHF exchange

There is no universal ideal day. The USD/CHF rate depends on the markets and on the monetary policy gap between the Fed (US Federal Reserve) and the SNB (Swiss National Bank). The Swiss franc, a safe-haven currency, tends to strengthen against the dollar in times of tension. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

USD/CHF is one of the major pairs on the foreign exchange market. Its volatility comes from the rate decisions of the Fed and the SNB, US economic figures (employment, inflation) and the safe-haven role shared by the dollar and the Swiss franc, which can react in opposite directions depending on the context.
