## USD/SGD: what has moved in recent months

The pair has barely moved since the end of the summer: 1.2713 on 28 August, 1.2790 on 19 October, while the dollar gained 2.6% against the franc over the same period. That is largely down to Singapore's exchange rate regime, which MAS left unchanged on 14 October.

USD

### The Fed raises rates unanimously

On 16 September 2026 the Federal Reserve raised the target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points, to 3.75%–4.00%, by twelve votes to none. US inflation came in at 3.7% year on year in September, and at 2.6% excluding food and energy. The dollar firmed: against the franc, it hit its 2026 high on 1 October, at 0.8353, and stood at 0.8250 at the 19 October reference rate, up 2.6% since 28 August. The next meeting is on 27 and 28 October 2026, then on 8 and 9 December.

SGD

### MAS pauses

Singapore does not steer a policy rate but the appreciation slope of its nominal effective exchange rate (S$NEER). On 14 October 2026 MAS left the slope, width and centre of this band unchanged, after two tightenings in April and July. MAS core inflation rose to 2.2% in August, headline inflation to 2.3%, and MAS forecasts core inflation of 1.5% to 2.0% for the year. The next statement is due no later than 29 January 2027.

### What it means for you

Even the Fed's 16 September hike produced only a limited move here. On this pair, the margin applied relative to the market rate often weighs more than volatility.

The economics of the pair

## USD/SGD: the Fed versus the MAS

The rate between the **US dollar (USD)** and the **Singapore dollar (SGD)** reflects the meeting of two very different monetary approaches: that of the Fed (US Federal Reserve) and that of the MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore).

In the United States, the Fed steers its policy through **interest rates**. When it raises its rates to contain inflation, the US dollar tends to appreciate against most currencies, including the SGD. The USD is also the world's main reserve currency: in times of tension, investors take refuge in it, which strengthens the greenback.

In Singapore, the MAS made an unusual choice: rather than setting a policy rate, it conducts its policy through the **exchange rate**. The Singapore dollar floats within a band against a weighted basket of its trading partners' currencies (the S$NEER), which the MAS adjusts to control imported inflation. As a result, the USD/SGD stays less volatile than many other pairs and moves within a relatively contained range, paced by the Fed's decisions and the MAS's half-yearly revisions.

Frequently asked questions

## Frequently asked questions about USD/SGD exchange

There is no universally ideal day. The USD/SGD rate depends on the policy of the Fed (US Federal Reserve) and on the management of the Singapore dollar by the MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore), which steers its currency via a basket of currencies. The pair moves within a relatively contained range. Monitor the real interbank rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

Unlike most central banks that set an interest rate, the MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore) conducts its monetary policy through the exchange rate. It lets the SGD float within a fluctuation band against a weighted basket of its trading partners' currencies (the S$NEER), which it adjusts to control imported inflation.

The Singapore dollar is managed within a band by the MAS, which limits its abrupt swings against the US dollar. The USD/SGD therefore stays less volatile than many other pairs. It mainly reacts to the Fed's rate decisions, to the strength of the US dollar globally and to periodic revisions of the MAS policy.
