# Proving your financial means for a Swiss student visa: how much, with which documents, in what order

 Reading time: 18 minutes | **Updated: 29 October 2026**

📌 In short: the canton sets the amount, the representation checks the documents

- **No federal amount**: the law requires the necessary financial means and each canton sets its own threshold. As at 29 October 2026: 20,000 francs per year in Geneva and Neuchâtel, 21,000 in Zurich, 2,000 francs per month in Basel-Stadt and St. Gallen, about 2,000 francs per month plus housing in Vaud; in Fribourg, the guarantor's undertaking covers 21,900 francs per year.
- **Three ways to prove it**: a bank confirmation, a guarantor's declaration of financial support or a firm scholarship guarantee. Zurich and St. Gallen require a bank in Switzerland for your own funds, Geneva and Basel-Stadt cite one as an example; Vaud accepts an account abroad, Neuchâtel an account in Switzerland or in Europe.
- **A parent abroad is rarely a valid guarantor**: most cantons require a guarantor domiciled in Switzerland. Among the cantons consulted, only Geneva (father, mother, brother or sister) and Vaud (with a certificate from the embassy) make an exception.
- **The order matters**: admission, payment of tuition fees, proof of means, application in person at the Swiss representation, decision of the canton, then the visa. Allow 2 to 4 months.
- **The proof must be provided again every year** when the permit is renewed, and a student job cannot replace it at the time of the application.

A student from Bangalore admitted to a master's programme at EPFL, a student from São Paulo enrolled at the University of Geneva, a master's student from Shanghai expected in Zurich: before obtaining their visa, all three must show that they will be able to live in Switzerland without public assistance. Federal law imposes this condition without specifying an amount. Each canton sets its own, accepts or refuses an account abroad, and admits or rejects a guarantor who lives outside Switzerland. This guide is intended for nationals of a state outside the European Union and EFTA. It brings together the requirements published by the migration offices of the main university cantons, consulted on 29 October 2026, and the order in which to prepare the file.

## 1\. What does federal law require, and why is there no single amount?

**Federal law requires sufficient financial means without putting a figure on them: it is the canton where you will live, usually the canton of your higher education institution, that sets the amount and assesses the proof.** Article 27 of the [Federal Act on Foreign Nationals and Integration](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/2007/758/en) (FNIA, SR 142.20) admits a foreign national for education or training under four cumulative conditions: the management of the school confirms that the person can follow the course, the person has suitable accommodation, has the necessary financial means, and has the required level of education and personal qualifications.

### Three forms of proof, given as examples

Article 23, paragraph 1, of the [Ordinance on Admission, Period of Stay and Employment](https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/2007/759/fr) (ASEO, SR 142.201, official text in French) lists three ways of proving these means, as examples rather than as an exhaustive list:

-   a **declaration of undertaking**, accompanied by a certificate of income or assets, from a solvent person domiciled in Switzerland, who must hold a residence or settlement permit if they are a foreign national;
-   **confirmation from a bank recognised in Switzerland** certifying the existence of sufficient assets;
- a **firm guarantee** that sufficient scholarships or study loans will be granted.

The [directives of the State Secretariat for Migration](https://www.sem.admin.ch/dam/sem/fr/data/rechtsgrundlagen/weisungen/auslaender/weisungen-aig.pdf.download.pdf/weisungen-aig-f.pdf) (SEM, FNIA Directives, as at 15 June 2026, section 5.1.1.4, in French) specify that a bank recognised in Switzerland is a bank authorised by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), that a scholarship or loan must be denominated in a stable currency, such as the franc, the euro, the dollar or the yen, and that other guarantees may be accepted on a case-by-case basis. They require confirmation that the means will be sufficient for the duration of the course (section 5.1.1.3). None of these texts gives an amount.

### Meeting the conditions does not guarantee the permit

Article 27 FNIA confers no right to a permit: according to the SEM directives (section 5.1.1.7), an application may be refused on the grounds of a restrictive admission policy even if all the conditions are met. Because the canton retains discretion, a complete and clear financial file matters. Education or training is also, in principle, admitted for a maximum of eight years (Art. 23(3) ASEO).

**💡 Do not confuse this with the tourist visa:** the SEM FAQ mentions about 100 francs per day, or 30 francs with a valid student card, as means of subsistence. This amount applies to a short Schengen stay (C visa), not to a stay for studies, which requires a national D visa and a cantonal permit.

## 2\. How much do you need to prove, depending on the canton where you study?

**In the cantons that publish an amount for your own funds, count on 20,000 to 24,000 francs per year, and more in Vaud, where housing comes on top of the 2,000 francs per month.** Seven cantons have an official amount: Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Fribourg, Zurich, Basel-Stadt and St. Gallen. The table below sets out the figures of the cantonal migration offices. Where the canton does not publish a figure, we give the one used by the canton's higher education institutions, and say so.

| Canton (office) | Published amount | Details |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Geneva (OCPM) | 20,000 francs per year of study, or 2,500 francs per month | The monthly amount applies to a regular income or to support from a guarantor. |
| Vaud (SPOP) | About 2,000 francs per month, plus housing costs | SPOP checklist, version of 1 January 2019, still the one published. The form for support from a guarantor uses 2,100 francs per month for one person. EPFL states that the representations generally require this amount for a full academic year. |
| Neuchâtel (SMIG) | 20,000 francs in an account, or 10,000 francs for one semester | A scholarship must amount to at least 1,500 francs per month. |
| Fribourg (SPoMi) | 21,900 francs per year, i.e. 1,825 francs per month | Amount of the guarantor's declaration of undertaking. The University of Fribourg applies the same amount to the student's bank account. |
| Valais (SPM) | No published amount | The canton requires a certificate of sufficient means of subsistence during the studies and proof of payment of the tuition fees. |
| Ticino (Ufficio della migrazione) | No published amount | Ask the cantonal office and your higher education institution. According to the Università della Svizzera italiana, the documents submitted to the migration office must be written in or translated into Italian. |
| Zurich (Migrationsamt) | 21,000 francs for twelve months | Directive of the Migrationsamt of 19 November 2021: the proof accompanies the first application and every extension application. |
| Basel-Stadt (Migrationsamt) | 2,000 francs per month | For living costs and the return journey. The University of Basel generally requires 24,000 francs. |
| St. Gallen (Migrationsamt) | At least 2,000 francs per month | Information sheet of March 2023. The University of St. Gallen generally requires 24,000 francs. |
| Bern (Migrationsdienst) | No amount published by the canton | The University of Bern, the Bern University of Applied Sciences and the Bern University of the Arts state 18,000 francs per year, i.e. 1,500 francs per month. |
| Lucerne (Amt für Migration) | No amount published by the canton | The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts states 21,000 francs per academic year, or 10,500 francs per semester, for the cantons of Lucerne and Zug. |

Official pages and documents of the cantonal offices and higher education institutions cited in the sources, consulted on 29 October 2026.

Two precautions are needed. First, a higher education institution may display a figure different from that of its canton: the University of Neuchâtel states 1,600 francs per month, whereas the canton requires 20,000 francs in an account. It is the migration office that decides, and its figure is the one to aim for. Second, a monthly threshold translates into an annual sum: 2,000 francs per month amounts to 24,000 francs for a twelve-month year, and the proof is generally required for a full year. Allow a margin above the threshold, especially if your funds are in another currency (section 7).

This amount covers everyday living costs, not the cost of the studies: tuition fees are proven separately, with a payment receipt. To estimate what a year will really cost, see our guide to the [budget of an international student in Switzerland](https://www.ibani.com/en/guides/international-student-budget-switzerland).

## 3\. Which documents are accepted?

**Your own funds certified by a bank, a guarantor's undertaking or a scholarship: these three routes are recognised everywhere, but each canton sets its own conditions on the bank, the account holder and the guarantor.**

### Your own funds: the bank confirmation

| Requirement | Cantons and higher education institutions concerned |
| --- | --- |
| Bank in Switzerland required | Zurich (bank authorised by FINMA), St. Gallen (bank or Swiss Post domiciled in Switzerland). The University of Bern, the Bern University of Applied Sciences and the Bern University of the Arts refer to the list of banks authorised by FINMA. |
| Bank in Switzerland cited as an example | Geneva (statement in your name from a bank recognised in Switzerland, among other accepted documents), Basel-Stadt (account in your name with a bank authorised in Switzerland, given as an example) |
| Foreign bank represented in Switzerland accepted | University of Fribourg and University of St. Gallen: a bank from the country of origin that has a branch or a representative office in Switzerland. In St. Gallen, however, it is the canton that has the final say, and it requires an institution domiciled in Switzerland. For students living in Zug, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts requires a bank authorised by FINMA, either Swiss or foreign with a branch in Switzerland. |
| Account abroad accepted | Vaud (account in Switzerland or abroad), Neuchâtel (account in Switzerland or in Europe) |
| Account in your name required | The universities of Basel, Fribourg and St. Gallen and the higher education institutions of Bern and Lucerne |
| Third-party account accepted with a letter of support | EPFL (canton of Vaud): the account holder signs a letter undertaking to support you during your studies |

The University of Basel states explicitly that blocked accounts and assets in the name of parents or third parties are not accepted, and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts refuses statements from parents or relatives. None of the federal or cantonal sources consulted requires a blocked account: what counts is that the sum is available in the account and certified by the bank.

If your canton requires a bank in Switzerland, you will need an account with an institution that accepts clients who are still domiciled abroad, or a bank from your country that is represented in Switzerland if your canton and your higher education institution accept it. Our guide to [opening a student bank account in Switzerland](https://www.ibani.com/en/guides/opening-swiss-student-bank-account) compares the options and their residence requirements.

### A scholarship or a study loan

The guarantee must be firm: a pending application is not enough. Zurich accepts scholarships and loans in francs, euros, dollars or yen. Neuchâtel requires a scholarship of at least 1,500 francs per month. EPFL specifies that if your scholarship is less than 2,000 francs per month, you must prove sufficient means to cover the difference. The main scholarships open to foreign students are presented in our guide to [scholarships and financial aid](https://www.ibani.com/en/guides/scholarships-financial-aid-international-students-switzerland).

### What does not count at the time of the application

A future salary in Switzerland cannot serve as proof. Article 38 ASEO allows a student at a higher education institution to take up secondary employment only at the earliest six months after the start of the course, for no more than 15 hours per week outside the holidays, with a certificate from the school and an application from an employer. Salaried doctoral students are an exception: the University of Basel accepts a valid employment contract as proof of means.

## 4\. Who can act as guarantor, and what do they commit to?

**In most cantons, the guarantor must live in Switzerland and, if they are a foreign national, hold a B or C permit: parents who live in your country of origin generally cannot sign the declaration of financial support.** Among the cantons consulted, only Geneva and Vaud provide for an exception.

| Canton | Where the guarantor must live | Undertaking and documents required |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Geneva | In Switzerland (form O); outside Switzerland only if the guarantor is the father, mother, brother or sister | Support of at least 2,500 francs per month, with the guarantor's bank statements or payslips; certificate from the debt enforcement office if the student or the guarantor is domiciled in Geneva |
| Vaud | In Switzerland, or abroad if the Swiss embassy certifies the financial undertaking | SPOP certificate constituting an irrevocable acknowledgement of debt, for five years, up to 2,100 francs per month for one person; proof of regular income and, if the guarantor lives in Switzerland, a certificate from the debt enforcement office |
| Neuchâtel | Only in Switzerland, with a B or C permit if a foreign national | Form F\_2.03, up to 20,000 francs per year and for five years at most, constituting an irrevocable acknowledgement of debt; three payslips, latest tax assessment, debt enforcement register extract less than three months old, lease; signature of the guarantor's spouse or registered partner, where applicable |
| Fribourg | In Switzerland, of Swiss nationality or with a B or C permit | Declaration of undertaking of 21,900 francs per year, to be confirmed each year; payslips for the last three months, tax assessment notice, lease, debt enforcement certificate and certificate of financial independence from the social services; the guarantor must also repay any social assistance |
| Zurich | In Switzerland, with a B or C permit if a foreign national | Three recent payslips, debt enforcement register extract covering the last three years, latest tax return with assessment notice, or bank statement |
| Bern | In Switzerland, with a B or C permit if a foreign national | Official maintenance guarantee form, irrevocable undertaking of up to 30,000 francs; solvency checked by the guarantor's municipality; new guarantee at each extension |
| Basel-Stadt | In Switzerland | Declaration of financial support from a solvent person |
| St. Gallen | In Switzerland | The guarantor's latest tax assessment notice and debt enforcement register extract |
| Aargau | In the canton of Aargau, of Swiss nationality or with a B or C permit | Maintenance guarantee form N18240: the guarantor undertakes to meet the student's needs in full |

Forms and information sheets of the cantonal migration offices, consulted on 29 October 2026.

### An undertaking that goes beyond a simple letter

In Vaud and Neuchâtel, the declaration constitutes an acknowledgement of debt within the meaning of Article 82 of the Federal Act on Debt Enforcement and Bankruptcy (DEBA): if the public authorities cover living, medical or return costs that have not been paid, they may initiate debt enforcement proceedings against the guarantor and, if the guarantor files an objection, ask the court for the provisional removal of the objection on the basis of this document; the court grants it unless the guarantor immediately shows credible grounds that they owe nothing. A guarantor must therefore weigh up what they are signing, and the student should avoid asking someone whose situation is fragile.

### What if your parents provide the funding from abroad?

Some Swiss representations mention a guarantor domiciled abroad: the information sheet of the embassy in Morocco, dated 14 October 2026, accepts financial support from a solvent guarantor abroad, with their bank statements for the last three months and proof of the family relationship. But it is the canton that decides, and the same sheet refers to the cantonal migration office for details. If you will live in Neuchâtel, Fribourg or Zurich, this form of support will not replace a guarantor in Switzerland. The safest route is generally to pay your parents' funds into an account in your name that complies with your canton's rules, and to keep a record of that transfer.

## 5\. In what order should you prepare the file, and how much time should you allow?

**The proof of means is prepared after admission and before the visa application is submitted to the Swiss representation; the canton then decides, and the visa is issued only once it has given the green light.** The steps below follow the SEM directives and the pages of the cantonal offices.

1. **Obtain admission.** The management of the school must confirm that you can follow the course (Art. 27 FNIA). For the University of Lausanne and EPFL, the canton of Vaud requires the certificate of admission to enrolment.
2. **Pay the tuition fees.** The file includes proof of payment of the tuition fees, or proof that the school's rules exempt you from paying them in advance (SEM directives, section 5.1.1.3). See our guide to [paying tuition fees in Switzerland from abroad](https://www.ibani.com/en/guides/paying-tuition-fees-switzerland).
3. **Put together the proof of means** according to the rules of your canton: amount, bank, account holder or guarantor. If your canton requires a bank in Switzerland, open the account and fund it before requesting the bank confirmation.
4. **Submit the application in person** at the Swiss representation for your place of residence. Nationals subject to the visa requirement must appear in person, unless an exemption applies (section 5.1.1.2). In principle, the representation invites you to an interview (section 5.1.1.8) and checks the authenticity of all bank documents (section 5.1.1.11).
5. **Wait for the canton's decision.** The representation forwards the file to the migration office of the canton where you will live, which decides. You wait for the outcome abroad.
6. **Receive the national D visa**, which the representation issues only after the canton's authorisation.
7. **Register within 14 days** of your arrival with the office designated by the canton (Art. 10(1) ASEO). You receive a B permit if the course lasts more than one year, and an L permit otherwise. In Basel, the university specifies that the proof of means must be presented again to the migration office after arrival.

The formalities on arrival, the choice between a B and an L permit, and renewal are explained in detail in our guide to the [student residence permit in Switzerland](https://www.ibani.com/en/guides/swiss-student-residence-permit).

### Published processing times

| Source | Stated timeframe |
| --- | --- |
| State Secretariat for Migration (FAQ) | At least one month, varying with the canton and the purpose of the stay |
| Swiss representations in China (April 2025) | 8 to 12 weeks for the decision |
| Embassy of Switzerland in Morocco (October 2026) | 10 to 12 weeks in total, as a guide |
| Swiss representations in the United States (April 2026) | At least 8 to 10 weeks |
| Consulates General in Brazil (October 2025) | 2 to 4 months on average |
| City of Bern | About two to three months before a reply |
| Canton of St. Gallen (March 2023) | Application to be submitted at least two months before the start of the course |

For a start in mid-September, a timeframe of two to four months places the submission of the file between May and July, and the proof of means must be ready by then. The University of Basel, for example, asks for the application for an assurance of a permit to be submitted by the end of July at the latest for the autumn semester and by mid-December for the spring semester.

## 6\. What form must the financial documents take?

**There is no federal format: the exact form is set out in the list of documents published by the Swiss representation in your country, which checks the authenticity of the documents.** The student lists of the representations consulted show recurring requirements:

- **Period covered by the statements**: the last three months for financial support or the guarantor in India, Morocco and Brazil, the last six months in Burkina Faso.
- **Bank stamp and signature** on the statements: required in India and Morocco.
- **Origin of the funds**: the representation in India asks for a clear explanation of where the money comes from (a loan with a letter from the bank, family assets, salary) and of the relationship between the student and the person supporting them.
- **Translation**: a document that is not in German, French, Italian or English must be translated; China requires a notarised translation. St. Gallen requires a translation of all documents that are not in German.
- **Apostille**: required in Brazil for all official documents.

These lists change and some are not recent: the one from the embassy in India dates from September 2023. Download the list of your representation when you prepare the file, and ask your canton for its guarantor form if you take that route. A document whose authenticity is in doubt may lead the canton to request additional checks on site, which lengthens the procedure.

## 7\. How do you gather the sum in francs without seeing it shrink?

**The threshold is expressed in francs: funds kept in another currency may fall below the threshold if the exchange rate moves, and their conversion has a cost that quickly adds up on 20,000 francs.**

### The exchange risk on a foreign currency account

If your canton accepts an account outside Switzerland (Vaud, or Neuchâtel for an account in Europe), your funds can remain in another currency. But the office assesses them in francs. A 5% fall in that currency against the franc takes 1,000 francs off a balance that was worth 20,000. Keep a sufficient margin above the threshold, or convert the sum into francs before requesting the bank confirmation.

### The cost of conversion

When you convert your funds into francs, the real cost adds the displayed fees to the gap between the rate applied and the market rate. On 21,000 francs, each percentage point of difference costs 210 francs. So compare the amount in francs that will arrive in the account, not just the advertised fees: our guide on [how to calculate an exchange rate](https://www.ibani.com/en/guides/how-to-calculate-exchange-rate) shows how to measure this gap.

### Keeping a record of the money

A large, recent payment into a student account raises questions about its origin. Keep your parents' transfer order, proof of their income or of the sale that financed the transfer and, where applicable, the loan agreement. These are the documents that some representations, such as the one in India, ask for in the case of family support, and they also help you answer your bank's questions.

**💡 Currency exchange with ibani:** [ibani](https://www.ibani.com/en/app) is a Geneva-based financial intermediary affiliated with SO-FIT, a self-regulatory organisation (SRO), and not a bank. Its Swiss IBAN in your name is a pass-through account and not a deposit account: it cannot serve as proof of means in any canton, either as an account statement or as a bank confirmation. It is used to convert your funds: you pay in your euros, dollars or pounds, ibani converts them into francs at the real market rate, plus a margin of 0.40% to 0.15% depending on the amount, then transfers the francs to your bank account in Switzerland or to your school for the tuition fees. ibani converts twelve currencies (CHF, EUR, USD, GBP, CAD, SGD, HKD, JPY, NOK, NZD, SEK and TRY); if your funds are in another currency, the conversion into one of them is first done in your country. Like any intermediary, ibani verifies your identity and may ask you about the origin of the funds. The day's rate can be followed on our [EUR-CHF converter](https://www.ibani.com/en/currency-converter/eur-to-chf-rate).

## 8\. What happens at renewal and after graduation?

**As a general rule, the permit for studies is issued for one year and the proof of means is requested again at each extension: you need to fund the entire duration of your studies, not just the first year.** Geneva issues the permit for one year, renewable until the end of the studies; Zurich extends it year by year.

- **Zurich** requires proof of means with each extension application.
- **Neuchâtel** requires the amount of 20,000 francs to be renewed at each extension.
- **Fribourg** requires the guarantor's undertaking to be confirmed each year.
- **Bern** requires a new maintenance guarantee at each extension, and the University of Bern states that the authorities ask each year for a statement showing a balance of 18,000 francs.
- **EPFL** specifies that at each annual extension, you must again prove 2,000 francs per month for at least six months.

In practice, the money you spend during the year must be replenished before the next renewal. For a two-year master's programme in Zurich, this represents at least 42,000 francs over the course of the studies, excluding tuition fees. The secondary employment allowed after six months, within the limit of 15 hours per week outside the holidays, helps to cover part of the expenses, but does not exempt you from providing the proof. Our guide to [student jobs and internships in Switzerland](https://www.ibani.com/en/guides/student-jobs-internships-switzerland) explains these rules in detail.

After graduating from a Swiss higher education institution, you can obtain a six-month permit to look for a job. The SEM directives (section 5.1.2) then again require sufficient financial means and suitable accommodation. The next steps are explained in our guide to [converting a student B permit into a work permit](https://www.ibani.com/en/guides/convert-student-b-permit-to-work-permit).

## 9\. Key takeaways

Switzerland has no national amount: it is the migration office of the canton where you will live, usually the canton where you study, that sets the threshold (from 20,000 to 24,000 francs per year in the cantons that publish one, more in Vaud where housing comes on top) and that decides whether your proof is admissible. Read its page or information sheet first, then the list of documents of the Swiss representation in your country: the first tells you how much and in what form, the second how to present the documents.

Three checks before you submit your file: **the bank**, because Zurich and St. Gallen require an institution in Switzerland for your own funds; **the guarantor**, who must generally live in Switzerland; **the timetable**, because you need to allow two to four months and provide the proof again every year.

## 10\. Frequently asked questions

There is no federal amount: the law requires sufficient financial means and leaves each canton to set its own threshold. As at 29 October 2026, Geneva requires 20,000 francs per year of study, Neuchâtel 20,000 francs in an account, Zurich 21,000 francs for twelve months, Fribourg 21,900 francs per year (the amount of the guarantor's undertaking, which the University of Fribourg also applies to the bank account), Basel-Stadt and St. Gallen 2,000 francs per month, and Vaud about 2,000 francs per month, plus housing. Bern and Lucerne do not publish an amount; their higher education institutions state 18,000 francs per year in Bern and 21,000 francs per academic year in Lucerne. The threshold that applies is that of the canton where you will live, usually the canton of your higher education institution: check it with that canton's migration office.

It depends on the canton. The federal ordinance mentions confirmation from a bank recognised in Switzerland, that is, a bank authorised by FINMA. Zurich and St. Gallen require a bank authorised or domiciled in Switzerland for your own funds; Geneva and Basel-Stadt cite, as an example, a statement in your name from a bank recognised in Switzerland. Vaud accepts an account in Switzerland or abroad, Neuchâtel an account in Switzerland or in Europe. Some higher education institutions, such as the University of Fribourg or the University of St. Gallen, also accept a foreign bank that has a branch or a representative office in Switzerland, subject to the opinion of the canton, which has the final say.

Rarely. In most cantons, the guarantor must be domiciled in Switzerland: this is the case in Zurich, Bern, Basel-Stadt, St. Gallen, Fribourg and Neuchâtel, and Aargau even requires a guarantor domiciled in the canton. If the guarantor lives in Switzerland and is a foreign national, the federal ordinance requires them, for the declaration of undertaking, to hold a residence or settlement permit (B or C permit). Geneva accepts a guarantor outside Switzerland only if they are the student's father, mother, brother or sister. Vaud accepts one if the Swiss embassy certifies the financial undertaking. If your parents are funding your studies from abroad, the safest route is usually to pay the funds into an account in your name that complies with your canton's rules.

No. Neither the federal law, nor the directives of the State Secretariat for Migration, nor the cantonal migration offices consulted require a blocked account. The University of Basel even specifies that blocked accounts are not accepted. What is required is a bank confirmation showing that the required sum is available, a guarantor's declaration of financial support or a firm scholarship guarantee.

Several weeks to several months. The State Secretariat for Migration advises allowing at least one month. Swiss representations publish longer timeframes for studies: 8 to 12 weeks in China, 10 to 12 weeks in Morocco, at least 8 to 10 weeks in the United States, 2 to 4 months on average in Brazil. St. Gallen asks for the application to be submitted at least two months before the start of the course. The visa is issued only after the canton has given its authorisation, and you wait for the outcome abroad.

Yes, in most cantons. The residence permit for studies is issued for one year and extended year by year. Zurich requires proof of means with each extension application, Neuchâtel requires the amount to be renewed at each extension, Fribourg requires the guarantor's undertaking to be confirmed each year, and Bern requires a new guarantee at each renewal. Plan the funding for the entire duration of your studies, not just for the first year.

No, not at the time of the application. A student from a state outside the EU and EFTA may work at the earliest six months after the start of their course, and for no more than 15 hours per week outside the holidays, with the agreement of their school and an application from an employer (Art. 38 ASEO). A future salary therefore cannot replace the bank confirmation, the guarantor or the scholarship required for the visa.
