The rate between the pound sterling (GBP) and the Canadian dollar (CAD) is a major cross pair on the foreign exchange market. Its dynamic is dictated by the relationship between two central banks : the Bank of England (BoE) and the Bank of Canada (BoC).
The pound sterling above all reflects the health of the UK economy and the BoE's policy. Since Brexit, it has been particularly sensitive to UK inflation, growth and employment data, as well as to the Bank of England's schedule of monetary tightening or easing.
The Canadian dollar, for its part, is a commodity-linked currency. As Canada is a major exporter of oil, the "loonie" (the CAD's nickname) often appreciates when the price of crude rises, and it remains closely correlated to the North American economic situation. The Bank of Canada adjusts its key rates according to inflation and the strength of domestic demand.
The result : the GBP/CAD rate moves with the monetary policy gap between London and Ottawa, the price of commodities and investors' risk appetite. A rising barrel of oil tends to support the CAD (and therefore push GBP/CAD lower), while a BoE more restrictive than the BoC supports the pound.

There is no universally ideal day. The GBP/CAD rate depends on market movements and on the decisions of the Bank of England (BoE) and the Bank of Canada (BoC). The Canadian dollar, a commodity-linked currency, often strengthens when the oil price rises, while the pound reacts to BoE announcements on UK inflation. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.
The GBP/CAD rate is a cross pair that reflects two distinct dynamics: on one side the monetary policy of the Bank of England and the health of the UK economy, on the other the price of commodities (oil first and foremost) and the decisions of the Bank of Canada. The interest-rate gap between the two central banks and the markets' risk appetite play a decisive role.
