The rate between the US dollar (USD) and the pound sterling (GBP) links the two oldest financial centres in the world, Wall Street and the City of London. Its dynamics are dictated by the relationship between two central banks : the US Federal Reserve (Fed) and the Bank of England (BoE).
The main driver of the pair is the interest rate gap between the two institutions. When the Fed keeps rates higher than the BoE to contain inflation, the dollar tends to appreciate against the pound ; conversely, a more restrictive tone from the Bank of England can support sterling. The dollar also benefits from its status as the world's reserve currency and a safe haven in times of tension.
The pound remains sensitive to the economic and political context of the United Kingdom. The pair has experienced strong shocks, from the Brexit referendum in 2016 to the episode of high volatility in autumn 2022. Releases on inflation, employment and growth on both sides of the Atlantic pace its movements day to day.

There is no universal ideal moment. The USD/GBP rate moves continuously according to the monetary policy gap between the US Federal Reserve (Fed) and the Bank of England (BoE), economic releases and the markets' appetite for risk. Monitor the real interbank rate in real time and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.
The USD/GBP pair mainly reflects the interest rate gap between the Fed and the Bank of England, as well as the relative strength of the US and British economies. Inflation, employment, growth and the global risk climate also weigh in : the dollar plays a safe-haven role, while the pound remains sensitive to the economic and political context of the United Kingdom.
