USD/CHF: what has moved in recent months

The dollar has lost its main 2026 engine, the yield gap. On 19 August the US Treasury doubled its long-dated debt buybacks: the 30-year yield fell back to 5.196% and the greenback shed nearly 2% against the franc in the session, down to 0.7959, before recovering to 0.8039 on 25 August.

The US Treasury cut the dollar's engine

The Federal Reserve held its policy rate in the 3.50%–3.75% range on 29 July 2026, on a tight nine-to-three vote. US inflation eased to 3.4% in July, core inflation to 2.5%, and retail sales fell for the first time in nine months. On 19 August the Treasury announced it was doubling its long-dated debt buybacks, from 2 to at least 4 billion dollars per operation, from 9 September to 4 November: the 30-year yield fell back to 5.196% after a nineteen-year high of 5.33%, and the dollar retreated against all its major counterparts.

SNB on hold, growth springs a surprise

The Swiss National Bank kept its policy rate at 0.00% at its 18 June 2026 assessment, a fourth consecutive hold, with inflation projected at 0.6% for both 2026 and 2027. Swiss inflation fell back to 0.4% year on year in July, a four-month low. The surprise of the quarter: GDP jumped 1.5% in the second quarter against expectations of 0.2% to 0.4%, driven by a 15.2% rebound in chemical and pharmaceutical exports. The next assessment is on 24 September 2026.

USD/CHF: the Fed versus the SNB

The rate between the US dollar (USD) and the Swiss franc (CHF) is one of the major pairs on the foreign exchange market. Its dynamics are driven by the monetary policy gap between two central banks: the US Federal Reserve (Fed) and the Swiss National Bank (SNB).

When the Fed raises its key rates faster than the SNB, the dollar tends to strengthen against the franc, as the yield gap makes USD investments more attractive. Conversely, a US easing cycle or a renewed risk aversion benefit the Swiss franc. A particularity of this pair: USD and CHF both share a status of safe-haven currency, so that in a global crisis they can appreciate simultaneously, compressing the amplitude of the rate.

Reference points: USD/CHF parity (1 dollar = 1 franc) is a psychological threshold frequently crossed in both directions. Over the past decade, the franc has broadly strengthened against the dollar, with the SNB ensuring it contains imported inflation. US employment and inflation figures, released each month, trigger the most marked movements on the pair.

Frequently asked questions about USD/CHF exchange

There is no universal ideal day. The USD/CHF rate depends on the markets and on the monetary policy gap between the Fed (US Federal Reserve) and the SNB (Swiss National Bank). The Swiss franc, a safe-haven currency, tends to strengthen against the dollar in times of tension. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

USD/CHF is one of the major pairs on the foreign exchange market. Its volatility comes from the rate decisions of the Fed and the SNB, US economic figures (employment, inflation) and the safe-haven role shared by the dollar and the Swiss franc, which can react in opposite directions depending on the context.
