CHF/SEK: the SNB versus the Riksbank

The rate between the Swiss franc (CHF) and the Swedish krona (SEK) pits two very different monetary profiles against each other. Its dynamics are dictated by the relationship between two central banks: the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and the Riksbank, the central bank of Sweden, one of the oldest in the world.

The Swiss franc is a safe-haven currency, renowned for its stability: the SNB has kept a very low policy rate and stands ready to intervene on the foreign exchange market to contain imported inflation. The Swedish krona, for its part, is a smaller, less liquid currency, sensitive to international trade and the euro area's economic climate. The Riksbank steers its policy according to its own economic cycle, which can put it out of step with the SNB.

This contrast explains the pair's nervousness: in periods of risk aversion, capital takes refuge in the franc, which appreciates against the SEK; conversely, a European recovery or a rise in Swedish rates can support the krona. As a result, the CHF/SEK moves more than more stable pairs such as the CHF/EUR. To choose your moment, compare the real rate before each exchange on our currency converter.

Frequently asked questions about CHF/SEK exchange

There is no universal ideal day. The CHF/SEK rate depends on market movements and the decisions of the SNB and the Riksbank. The Swiss franc, a safe-haven currency, tends to appreciate against the Swedish krona in periods of risk aversion, while the SEK, more sensitive to the economic cycle, strengthens when European growth accelerates. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

With ibani, you fund your account in Swiss francs (CHF), then convert the amount into Swedish kronor (SEK) at the real market rate before transferring it to a bank account in Sweden. The operation is 100% digital, with no hidden fees in the rate.

The Swiss franc is a very stable safe-haven currency, whereas the Swedish krona is a smaller, less liquid currency strongly correlated with international trade and the euro area's economic climate. This difference in nature makes the CHF/SEK pair more volatile than pairs such as CHF/EUR, with amplified movements in periods of stress or economic recovery.

ibani applies a transparent margin from 0.40% on the real interbank rate, decreasing with amounts. There are no opening or account maintenance fees. Transfers to a Swedish krona account may, however, be subject to correspondent bank fees, which are independent of ibani. See the details on the Rates page.
