EUR/SEK: the ECB versus the Riksbank

The rate between the euro (EUR) and the Swedish krona (SEK) is closely watched, because the very open Swedish economy is tightly linked to the eurozone, its main trading partner. Its dynamics depend on the relationship between two central banks : the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Riksbank, the central bank of Sweden and one of the oldest in the world.

Sweden is not part of the eurozone : it kept its currency after the 2003 referendum and pursues an independent monetary policy. The krona is a relatively small currency and less liquid than the euro, which makes it sensitive to risk aversion. In periods of uncertainty, investors often abandon the SEK in favour of deeper currencies, and the krona then tends to weaken against the euro.

The gap in policy rates between the ECB and the Riksbank is a key driver of the pair : when the Riksbank eases its policy faster than the ECB, the krona tends to weaken ; conversely, a rebound in European demand or a Swedish tightening can support it. In recent years, the SEK has set multi-year lows against the euro, against a backdrop of moderate growth and easing inflation. Frequently asked questions about EUR/SEK exchange

There is no universal ideal day. The EUR/SEK rate depends on market movements and on decisions by the ECB and the Riksbank. The Swedish krona, a smaller currency, tends to weaken against the euro in periods of risk aversion, and to strengthen when European growth and demand for Swedish exports accelerate. Monitor the real rate continuously and trigger your exchange at the moment that suits you.

With ibani, you fund your account in euros (EUR), then convert the amount into Swedish krona (SEK) at the real market rate before transferring it to a bank account in Sweden. The operation is 100% digital, with no fees hidden in the rate.

The Swedish krona is a relatively small currency and less liquid than the euro, strongly correlated with international trade and with the economic conditions of the eurozone, its main partner. It is also sensitive to the gap in policy rates between the Riksbank and the ECB. These factors make the EUR/SEK pair more volatile than pairs between major currencies, with movements amplified in periods of stress or economic recovery.

ibani applies a transparent margin from 0.40% on the real interbank rate, decreasing with amounts. There are no opening or account maintenance fees. Transfers to a Swedish krona account may however be subject to correspondent bank fees, which are independent of ibani. See the details on the Rates page.
